Uptown Crowned Magazine of the Year

Uptown has been named Magazine of the Year at the 2019 Newsawards.

The magazine started life as an innovation by Newsquest sales manager Shane Harding in 2017 who believed there was an opportunity to diversify into the luxury magazine market, aiming for a totally different audience than any other of our publications.

Now, after an initial launch in Oxford, there are 24 regional versions – and rising – and Uptown has proved to be the perfect platform for advertisers to showcase their luxury goods and services to the most affluent of audiences.

The judges of the Newsawards (that are the only awards dedicated to celebrating the best in news media print, technology and business innovation) clearly agreed. They said:

Uptown is a convincing winner. Really cool covers with a fantastically specific regional focus, made more financially viable by sharing the design across different regions – smart thinking by Newsquest.  This portfolio of magazines features excellent photography, with high end production values, beautiful layout and design, enhanced with outstanding printing. Added to which, commercially it’s very successful.

Shane said:

I am so excited that Uptown has won. I came up with the idea for it – but an idea is nothing without a team of highly skilled and extremely passionate people who have worked really hard to make the dream a reality. I am so lucky to work for a company whose culture encourages us to innovate and who are prepared to take a leap of faith and support our ideas. Thank you for letting us launch and grow Uptown and congratulations to all involved.

Dorset Living, also published by Newsquest, was commended in the same category for being a “smart publication that hides its economical production hub methods well; a real heavyweight, attractive glossy product.”
